Project Development

For the last 3 years, Mr. Bill Somerlot, the Department Head of NAHS Environmental Science, has been conducting research for the ESEC.  As he has guided the AP Environmental Students to conduct an Impact Study for the site of the building, the students gained knowledge and experience through the hands on study of the land and surrounding area.

Impact Study Contents:

          -General Description of Site

          -Site History

          -Biotic Components of Site

          -Abiotic Components of Site

          -Nearby Land Use

This information stands as the first substantial piece of work completed towards the Environmental Stewardship Education Center.  As New Albany already has an outstanding environmental science program, the original idea was that this building would enhance the students’ education and also integrate nature education into the community.

In the following years, the idea has been put on the back burner as new construction projects within the district, such as the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts and the K-1 School Building, have taken priority in the village.

After this preliminary work was completed, I began to learn about the project and take my part in developing the idea. It wasn’t until my Senior year in Architecture began that I truly took on the project as my own. (See DESIGNER’S STORY for more information)
